Turned from a single slab of black walnut, this bowl preserves the natural live edge of the tree. The dark heartwood transitions into the lighter sapwood near the rim, giving the piece a dramatic contrast that no two pieces of walnut will repeat exactly.

Process

The blank was rough-turned green (with moisture still in the wood) to remove the bulk of the material, then set aside to dry slowly for several months. Once stable, it went back on the lathe for the final turning, sanding through the grits to 400, and a final hand-sand to 600 inside the bowl.

The natural edge required careful tool control to avoid blowout where the bark meets the live wood. The rim shows the original contour of the log.

Finish

Tung oil was applied in four thin coats, each allowed to cure fully before the next. The final surface was buffed with carnauba wax paste for a soft lustre that doesn’t feel plastic. The finish is durable enough for dry use — fruit, bread, decorative objects — but should not be used for liquid storage.

Notes

This particular bowl has sold, but similar pieces can be commissioned. Each bowl will be unique due to the nature of the wood.
